Liverpool acoustic band Big Number plays a full performance of the Beatles' album Revolver to mark its 60th anniversary.
Big Number are playing the Music Room at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on Sunday 25 October, a one-off show marking 60 years of Revolver. It's presented by Liverpool Acoustic, and the band will run through the whole album in one go, with a few other tracks from the era added in around it.
Revolver is one of those records that still feels like a turning point. It's the moment the Beatles stopped touring and went fully into the studio, trading the beat-group sound for something more adventurous. You've got the sharp songwriting of 'Taxman' and 'Here, There and Everywhere' sitting alongside the tape-loop soundscape of 'Tomorrow Never Knows' — a song that basically invented a whole new way of thinking about the recording studio. Liverpool Acoustic describes it as one of the most revolutionary albums in popular music and a defining moment in the band's evolution, and that's a fair way to put it. It's the record where they really started to stretch what a pop song could be.
Big Number, fronted by the city's adopted troubadour Thom Morecroft, will be taking on the full album. Morecroft is joined by Mike Blue and Dylan Cassin, with special guests added to the bill. They're known for their musicianship, rich harmonies and attention to detail, and this is a one-off event rather than a touring show. It follows their previous Dylan and Beatles sets, so they're no strangers to working through a classic record.
