Halloween double bill of two horror classics, Young Frankenstein and Bram Stoker's Dracula, with costumes and prizes at The Cardigan Arms.
The Cardigan Arms is putting on a horror double bill on Saturday 31 October, with Young Frankenstein and Bram Stoker's Dracula running back-to-back. It's a Halloween night of two cult classics, and both are shown with subtitles, so you can keep your eyes on the screen rather than the captions.
Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein (1974) opens the night. It follows a young neurosurgeon who inherits his grandfather Dr Victor von Frankenstein's castle and rediscovers the mad doctor's reanimation experiments. The cast is a proper ensemble: Gene Wilder in the lead, with Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr, Kenneth Mars and Madeline Kahn. It's a comedy that plays on the old monster movie tropes, and it's got a fair bit of the original 1930s atmosphere to it.
Then comes Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), directed by Francis Ford Coppola. It centres on the 15th-century prince Count Dracula, condemned to feed on the living, who imprisons the lawyer Jonathan Harker after spotting a photo of Harker's fiancée Mina, the spitting image of his dead wife, and then sets off for London. Gary Oldman takes the title role, with Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, Keanu Reeves, Richard E. Grant, Cary Elwes, Billy Campbell, Sadie Frost and Tom Waits. It's a far more gothic, moody affair than the first half of the night, so the two sit quite differently side by side.

Beyond the films, there are treats handed out throughout the night and prizes for the best costumes, so it's worth putting some effort into your outfit if you're in the mood for it. The screening takes place upstairs at The Cardigan Arms, 364 Kirkstall Rd, LS4 2HQ, which means there's no lift access to the room.
