Animated film screening at Hyde Park Picture House, part of the Hyde & Seek family-friendly strand.
The Secret World of Arrietty is showing at Hyde Park Picture House from Friday 16 October to Thursday 22 October, with screenings across the week. It's a Studio Ghibli film, an adaptation of The Borrowers, one of those children's books almost everyone knows, and it comes from the same team behind Spirited Away and Ponyo, with Academy Award nominee Hiromasa Yonebayashi directing.
The story is a simple one: tiny people called Borrowers live beneath the floorboards, hidden from humans, until brave Arrietty is discovered by a human boy named Shawn. From there, the two form a friendship that blossoms into a heartwarming adventure. It runs an hour and a half, and you can see it in Japanese with English subtitles or in an English dubbed version. At Hyde Park Picture House, it sits among the cinema's Studio Ghibli favourites and belongs to the Hyde & Seek family-friendly strand.
That strand is built around making screenings accessible, so there are toddler-friendly, autism-friendly, audio description and captioned shows, plus a Pay What You Can option. It's a good one to keep in mind if you're taking kids or anyone who needs a bit of extra consideration.
