Screening of the 1984 autobiographical film 'The Runner' by Amir Naderi, closing the 'Between Innocence and Reality: Iranian Cinema and Childhood' season at Hyde Park Picture House.
The Runner screens at Hyde Park Picture House on Sunday 25 October, the final film in the Between Innocence and Reality: Iranian Cinema and Childhood season. It's a 1984 film by Amir Naderi, running an hour and thirty-four minutes, in Persian with English subtitles. The screening is introduced by Dr Vahideh Golzard, lecturer in Persian and Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds.
The Runner is an autobiographical film, edited by the New Wave Iranian cinema legend Bahram Beyzair and carried by child actor Majid Niroumand's extraordinary performance. It's described as one of the first films to spark the wave of great Iranian post-revolutionary cinema of the 1980s and 90s, setting the tone for decades of realist, child-centred filmmaking. If you've followed the season so far, this is the one that closes it.
The season itself, Between Innocence and Reality: Iranian Cinema and Childhood, was curated with Dr Maryam Ghorbankarimi. It showcases the legacy of the Kanoon Parvaresh Fekri children's institution, the body responsible for award-winning Iranian films by directors like Abbas Kiarostami, Jafar Panahi, Majid Majidi and Pouran Derakhshandeh. The Runner sits right in that tradition: a child at the centre, a realist approach, and a story that looks at childhood from the inside.
