Amateur production of Mary Zimmerman's The Odyssey, blending Homer's ancient myth with contemporary humour and physical theatre.
Leeds Conservatoire and Leeds Playhouse are bringing Mary Zimmerman's The Odyssey to the Quarry Theatre this weekend, with three performances running from Friday 16 to Saturday 17 October. It's a partnership between the two, directed by Ryan McBryde, and it takes Homer's ancient epic and gives it a mischievous, modern twist.
If you know the story, you know the basics: Odysseus's long, winding journey home after the Trojan War. Zimmerman's version blends that ancient myth with contemporary humour and a bit of irreverence, turning the voyage into a playful, shape-shifting, and highly physical adventure. The New York Times called it "the greatest show in the sky, on the seas, even on earth, with side trips to the underworld," and it's described as surprising and deeply human, carried by live music and movement. It's presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd on behalf of Samuel French, Inc.
It's an amateur production, so you'll be seeing the Conservatoire's students on stage rather than a professional company. That fits the physical, ensemble nature of the piece, which relies on movement and live music to bring the journey to life. The whole thing runs in the Quarry Theatre, part of the Leeds Playhouse site at Playhouse Square, Quarry Hill, LS2 7UP.
