35mm screening of Ken Russell's 'The Devils' (1971), introduced by Chiara Amendola, with an exclusive companion magazine.
Hyde Park Picture House is bringing Ken Russell's The Devils back to the big screen on Wednesday 18 November and Thursday 19 November, with screenings at 18:00 and 20:45. Both are on 35mm, and both are introduced by Chiara Amendola, the creator of Occulture Magazine. It's part of the cinema's 'Creatures of the Night' strand.
The Devils is a 1971 film based on the true story of the 17th-century priest Urbain Grandier, who was accused of bewitching a convent of nuns. From there, it opens up into a look at the collusion between church and state, told through religious persecution, collective hysteria and institutional corruption. Vanessa Redgrave, Oliver Reed and Gemma Jones all have roles. It was censored for more than half a century, so this is one of the few chances to see it as intended.
The screenings come from a 4K restoration of Russell's preferred 2004 edit, assembled from the original camera negative with picture and sound restoration by Warner Bros. It's a 35mm print, so you're seeing it on film rather than a digital projection. Chiara Amendola will introduce the sessions, and there's a companion magazine, Undoing the Exorcism, printed here in Leeds by the independent magazine Occulture. That's limited to 150 copies, so if you're after one, it's worth getting in early.
