Shakespeare's tragedy of forbidden love, directed by Chelsea Walker and co-produced by English Touring Theatre, Leeds Playhouse, the Royal Lyceum Theatre and Nottingham Playhouse.
Romeo and Juliet opens at Leeds Playhouse on Wednesday 3 March, with the run continuing through to 20 March. It's a retelling of Shakespeare's classic, and the production frames the tragedy as the story of two teenagers who fall madly in love while their families tear each other apart: an explosive, urgent tale of forbidden love, secrets, loyalty and grief, where one wrong decision can change everything.
Chelsea Walker directs, with William Shakespeare as the writer. It's a co-production between Leeds Playhouse, English Touring Theatre, the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh and Nottingham Playhouse, and it forms part of the LCIP 2026 Programme. The show is also touring nationally, with dates at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh, the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Northern Stage and Nottingham Playhouse.
The Leeds run opens the venue's 2026-2027 season, the first under artistic director Tom Wright, which also brings a refreshed Playhouse Connect engagement programme. The production is rated age 12+.
