A family-friendly trail through the atmospheric ruins of Kirkstall Abbey to discover the nocturnal creatures that live there, such as bats, foxes and owls, during the October half term.
Kirkstall Abbey is running its Nocturnal Creatures Trail from 24 October to 1 November, a family-friendly walk through the ruins during the October half term. It's run by Leeds Museums and Galleries, and it turns the abbey grounds into a bit of a scavenger hunt for the kids.
The idea is simple: you follow a trail of creatures to find and spot, and as you go, you pick up information about the animals that call the abbey home but that you rarely see during the day. It's a good way to get the little ones moving and looking closely at things they'd usually walk right past. Among the creatures you'll be hunting for are pipistrelle bats, foxes and owls — the sort of things that only come out once the sun's gone down.
If you're after something a bit more structured, there are guided sessions running from 10:00 to 16:00 on 25, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 October and 1 November. Those are the days when someone will lead you through, so you don't have to figure it out on your own. Otherwise, the trail is open across the whole period, from 24 October through to 1 November, so you can fit it in whenever suits your half-term plans.
