Family-friendly Christmas trail that fills the Kirkstall Abbey ruins with stars to find on the first day of Advent.
Following Yonder Star Trail runs at Kirkstall Abbey from Monday 8 December to Thursday 24 December, with the trail opening on the first day of Advent. It's a family-friendly activity that fills the abbey ruins with Christmas stars to find — some that twinkle, some that sparkle and others that twirl in the wind. You can pick up a warming hot chocolate from the abbey café to take along as you wander through the grounds.
Kirkstall Abbey itself is one of the most complete examples of a medieval Cistercian monastery in Britain, a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument set in parkland along the banks of the River Aire, right next to Abbey House Museum. The visitor centre tells the story of the 12th-century monks and houses a touch table, which is a unique 18th-century catalogue of images of the abbey. The grounds also include a large children's playground, and volunteers run regular tours alongside Tales of Kirkstall Abbey, an informal audio guide about the people who called the monastery home.

The trail is included in admission, and the abbey is run as a 'Give What You Can' site with a suggested donation of £5 per person. It's open 10:00 to 16:00 from Monday 8 December to Thursday 24 December, with a slightly different window on Saturday 12 December (12:00 to 16:00) and Christmas Eve (10:00 to 13:00).
