Screening of 'La Bola Negra', the queer operatic melodrama by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, at Hyde Park Picture House.
La Bola Negra is coming to Hyde Park Picture House on Friday 6 November, part of a wider Leeds run that includes the Vue in the Light and Cottage Road Cinema. It's a genre-defying queer epic from directors Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, and it's rooted in the legacy of the Spanish writer and playwright Federico García Lorca, reimagining his work as a sweeping operatic melodrama.
The film weaves together three stories across different decades in Spain. In 1932, a young man waits to learn if he's secured membership in the local casino; in 1937, a young nationalist soldier guards a republican prisoner; and in 2017, a historian inherits an unexpected document from his grandfather. It's a long one, running 155 minutes, in Spanish and Italian with English subtitles. The cast is led by Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau and Carlos González, with Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close also appearing. One critic called it a 'decades-spanning love odyssey' as impressive as it is moving.
