Screening of the documentary Iron Ladies about working-class women in the 1984-85 Miners' Strike, followed by a discussion with Lorraine Stansbie.
Hyde Park Picture House is screening the documentary Iron Ladies on Tuesday 20 October, with the film followed by a discussion. The screening is part of the cinema's Tuesday Wonders and Freshers 2026 strands, and it runs for an hour and 38 minutes.
Directed by Daniel Draper and distributed by Shut Out the Light, Iron Ladies tells the story of the working-class women who found themselves at the forefront of the 1984-85 Miners' Strike, when they took on the British state. It draws on testimonies from women across the coalfields, from Scotland to Kent, to show how they became the backbone of the strike. The Big Issue called it a film that "finds a new angle by putting the spotlight on the unsung women", and The Guardian described it as a "fascinating account".
After the film, there's a discussion with Lorraine Stansbie, who was part of Barnsley Women Against Pit Closures, moderated by Denise Carr, the Leeds Unison Branch Chair. It's a chance to hear from someone who was there, and to talk through the history the film brings back into the light.
