Hugh Cornwell, former lead singer of The Stranglers, plays his final solo acoustic tour with songs from his new album 'Succubus'.
Hugh Cornwell plays City Varieties Music Hall on Friday 13 November, starting at 7:30pm. He's touring his next studio album, Succubus, and these songs will be heard live for the first time on this run — a tour he's called his final solo acoustic tour.
Cornwell was the lead singer and songwriter of The Stranglers during their golden period, writing all the band's most memorable songs across ten albums. His lyrics to 'Golden Brown' are often described as a songwriting masterclass. He fronted the group from 1974 to 1990 before moving into a solo career that has produced ten critically acclaimed albums, culminating in Moments of Madness, which has been called a 'late flowering classic' and a 'modern-day masterpiece'.
There's a bit of history behind him that doesn't always make the listings. Born in London in 1949 and raised in Tufnell Park and Kentish Town, he attended William Ellis School in Highgate, where he was friends with Richard Thompson, who later joined Fairport Convention. He went on to graduate with a degree in biochemistry from Bristol University.
