Illusionist Dynamo returns to the stage with his first UK tour in a decade, a showcase of magic from across his career at the City Varieties.
Dynamo is back at City Varieties Music Hall from 7 to 10 February 2027, his first UK tour in a decade. He's coming off a run of sell-out residencies at London's Underbelly, and this is the first time he's taken the show on the road since those dates. The show is called Up Close and Magical, and it's a bit of a career retrospective, pulling together magic from across his years on stage rather than focusing on one new trick.
If you've followed him, you'll know him as Dynamo, but his real name is Steven Frayne. He's 43 and born in Bradford, and he grew up practising precision card handling in the footsteps of his grandfather. This tour marks a return to the stage after a battle with Crohn's disease, which at its worst left him taking 28 tablets a day. He's spoken about falling back in love with magic through this, and he describes the show as being about the moments of wonder shared between people rather than television or big stunts.
The tricks range from the subtle to the more theatrical. There's a tweak on nature where he brings a dead leaf back to its natural shade of green, a Matrix-style levitation, and walking on water. It's a good mix of the close-up stuff he started with and the larger illusions he's become known for. The show has picked up four-star reviews from The Guardian and The Times.
