A read-aloud book club that explores classic American literature through group reading and discussion at the Spades Park Branch.
WitLITS meets at the Spades Park Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library on Friday, November 20, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. It's a read-aloud book club that works through classic American literature, and it asks only one thing of its members: to show up.
There's no reading at home and no pressure to be caught up. Instead, the group listens to a book read aloud in short segments while everyone follows along in their own copy. They stop frequently to discuss meanings in the text that are often overlooked, so you're reading and talking in the same hour rather than coming prepared with notes from the week before. If you've fallen behind or haven't picked up the book in a while, you can just walk in and pick up exactly where the group is.
The Spades Park Branch has its own history to match the classics. It was built with a $120,000 grant from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation and opened in 1912, six months after the East Washington Branch. It went through a $610,000 renovation in 1987 and celebrated its centenary in 2012. The branch is located at 1801 Nowland Avenue in Indianapolis.
