Weekly Thursday session in which long-term Indianapolis residents share their stories while participants listen, reflect and create art, followed by an ensemble piece.
Storytelling Drawing Sessions are happening every Thursday from 1:30 to 2:30 PM at the Folklore Micro-Museum, 1533 Lewis St, Indianapolis, IN 46202. It's a free session open to the public, and it's aimed at artists of all skill levels and mediums.
The format is pretty straightforward: each session pairs artists with long-term Indianapolis residents. The residents share their stories while the artists listen, reflect, and work on art projects of their own choosing. You aren't asked to draw the person or the story literally—you bring your own medium and work on whatever you like while you listen. The session ends with an ensemble piece inspired by the speaker's stories, so you'll walk away with something that connects your work to the stories told that day.
Because it's open to all skill levels, you don't need to be a professional or even a regular artist to join in. Whether you're a seasoned painter, a casual sketcher, or someone who hasn't picked up a pencil in years, the focus is more on the act of listening and responding than on the finished product. The ensemble piece at the end brings everyone's individual work together into one shared result, so you're part of a group effort rather than just working in a vacuum.
