Financial literacy program for children ages 6 to 12 that turns budgeting into a game by managing an allowance for an imaginary pet.
Pet $ense comes to the Southport Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library on Saturday, November 21, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. It's a financial literacy program for children that turns budgeting into a game: participants adopt an imaginary pet and have to manage their allowance to buy supplies and tackle challenges to give their new best friend the best life possible.
Instead of talking about money in the abstract, the kids work through the practical side of it. They start with a set amount of money and have to make choices about how to spend it on their pet, figuring out what's necessary and what can wait. The challenges they run into along the way force them to adjust their plans on the fly, which is a good way to show how budgeting actually works in the real world. It's a hands-on approach that lets them practice making decisions and seeing the results without any real money on the line.

The session is part of the Indianapolis Public Library's official financial education program, brought to the library by the Indiana Securities Division. It's aimed at school-age children ages 6 to 12, and an ASL interpreter is provided. If you've got a kid in that range who'd enjoy the pet angle, it's a low-pressure way to introduce them to the basics of money management. The whole thing runs for an hour at the Southport Branch, 2630 East Stop 11 Road, on Saturday morning, November 21, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM.
