An exhibition exploring the American imagination through art, architecture and nature, marking the 250th anniversary of US independence.
Newfields is marking the United States' 250th anniversary with Our America: 250 Years of Independence, Innovation, and Creativity, which runs from October 15, 2026, through January 3, 2027. The exhibition frames the semiquincentennial as a chance to rediscover the American imagination through art, architecture, and nature, and it doesn't stay in one place. It unfolds across the IMA Galleries, The Garden, and the campus's historic homes as a mosaic of installations and interventions, showing how artists and designers have shaped the visual and physical landscape of the country.
The tour takes you through sixteen stops, including the Lilly House and Oldfields Gardens by the Olmsted Brothers Firm, and the Miller House and Garden by Eero Saarinen and Dan Kiley. Along the way, you'll find iconic works by Georgia O'Keeffe, Elizabeth Catlett, Edward Hopper, and Horace Pippin, hanging alongside Thornton Dial's Don't Matter How Raggly the Flag, It Still Got to Tie Us Together (2003). It's a wide-ranging look that pulls from the galleries and the grounds, so you'll be moving between indoor spaces and the gardens as you go.

Because it's spread across the whole campus, you can take it at your own pace—spend a morning in the galleries and an afternoon walking the gardens, or save it for a full day. The exhibition is included with general admission and free for members, and it runs through the holiday season, so you have from mid-October through early January to fit it in. You can find it at Newfields, 4000 N. Michigan Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46208.
