Campus-wide exhibition at Newfields marking the US semiquincentennial with art, architecture and gardens across the museum.
Our America: 250 Years of Independence, Innovation, and Creativity opened at Newfields on October 25, 2026, and runs through January 3, 2027. It's a campus-wide project that stretches across the IMA Galleries, the garden, and the museum's historic homes, framing the United States' semiquincentennial as a chance to rediscover the American imagination through art, architecture, and nature.
The tour takes you through 16 stops, and the list of artists is a good one: Georgia O'Keeffe, Elizabeth Catlett, Edward Hopper, Horace Pippin, and Thornton Dial. Those names sit alongside architectural landmarks you can walk through, like the Lilly House and Oldfields Gardens, designed by the Olmsted Brothers Firm, and the Miller House and Garden by Eero Saarinen and Dan Kiley. It's a broad sweep, moving from the galleries into the gardens and the houses, so you're seeing the art and the architecture in the same breath.
Newfields presents the American story as a living, evolving landscape of creativity, showing how artists and designers have shaped both the visual and physical landscape of the country. The way it's laid out—across the galleries, the garden, and the historic homes—means you're not just looking at paintings on a wall; you're seeing the built environment they're talking about. It's a long run, so there's plenty of time to work your way through the stops at your own pace.
