Self-directed parent-child session with gross and fine motor equipment, books and musical instruments for children from birth to five.
Meet & Play is back at the Lawrence Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library on Wednesday, November 18, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. It's a self-directed session for caregivers and children from birth to five years old, so it's geared toward the little ones and the adults who look after them.
The setup is straightforward: the library puts out gross and fine motor equipment, books, and musical instruments, and you and your child take it from there. Since it's self-directed, there's no set schedule or led activity to follow. You can let your kid wander from the toys to the books, or spend the whole hour with the instruments. It's the kind of thing that works whether you've got a baby who just wants to touch everything or a preschooler with enough energy to keep you on your toes.
If you haven't spent much time there, the Lawrence Branch has a bit of a history in the neighborhood. It first opened in 1967 on North Franklin Road in a storefront that used to be the Lawrence Post Office—the first branch to open within an incorporated town in Marion County. In 1983, it moved into a larger, permanent 13,500-square-foot facility, and the whole place was renovated in 2020. The session is made possible by The Indianapolis Foundation Library Fund through a grant to The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation.
