Live jazz concert by the Jonathan Scales Fourchestra, a power trio blending jazz, classical and progressive rock with Latin rhythms and funk.
Jonathan Scales Fourchestra plays The Jazz Kitchen on Friday, October 16, with the set starting at 6:30 PM. It's a power trio, and the lead instrument is one you don't usually see fronting a jazz group: steel pans. Jonathan Scales handles the pans, E'Lon JD is on electric bass, and Maison Guidry is on drums.
That steel pan lead is the thing that sets them apart. Instead of a horn or a piano taking the melody, the whole sound is built around the pans, and the rest of the band follows that. They describe their style as a blend of jazz, classical, and progressive rock, mixed with Latin rhythms and funk. It's a wide reach—jazz and classical on one end, prog rock and funk on the other—and the steel pans are what tie those different threads together.
They've played club and festival stages across North America and Europe, and Scales has toured Africa, Southeast Asia, and Central Asia as a Cultural Ambassador for the US Department of State. They also did an NPR Tiny Desk Concert with Béla Fleck, so if you've seen that, you've got a good idea of how they sound live.
