Indianapolis Ballet and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra present 'Ballets Russes', a program of The Firebird and Raymonda Variations exploring the influence of the Ballets Russes.
Indianapolis Ballet and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra are teaming up for Ballets Russes, running March 5-7 at Clowes Memorial Hall (4602 Sunset Ave). It's a mixed-repertoire program built around The Firebird and Raymonda Variations, and it marks the fourth season in a row the two companies have worked together. This time, the ISO will play in the pit for three Indianapolis Ballet productions in a single seasonβBallets Russes alongside Cinderella and The Nutcrackerβwhich is a step up from previous years.
The program is billed as a look at the revolutionary influence of the Ballets Russes on 20th-century dance and orchestral music. If you're not familiar with the name, the original Ballets Russes was the company that fundamentally changed how ballet worked in the early 1900s, bringing together choreographers, composers, and artists to create something entirely new. The Firebird is one of the most famous pieces to come out of that era, with Stravinsky's score still as sharp as it was when it first premiered.
Having the ISO in the pit makes a difference you can actually hear. There's something about a full orchestra playing live that a recording just can't match, and it's a big part of why this partnership has stuck for four seasons. The collaboration is supported by the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation and the Butler Arts & Events Center, and it's one of three times the symphony will be backing the ballet this season.
