Best-selling horror author Michael West talks about writing chilling stories, character development, suspense and getting his work into readers' hands.
Michael West is coming to the Lawrence Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library on Saturday, October 24, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM. He's a best-selling horror author, and the session is built around what it actually takes to write stories that give readers the chills.
West is going to break down a few specific parts of the process. He'll talk about developing realistic characters—the kind of people you actually care about before things go sideways—and how to craft suspenseful situations that keep a reader turning pages. He's also going to touch on the real-life horrors of getting your work into the hands of readers, which is a side of the writing life that doesn't always make it into the glossy parts of a bio.
The session is aimed at adults and is open to anyone interested in writing horror or just in crafting better stories in general. You don't have to be a genre writer to get something out of it; the basics of character and suspense carry over to pretty much anything you're working on. If you've ever wondered how a professional builds a scene that sticks with you, this is a good place to hear it explained.
