Homeschool at the Library service project session in which homeschool families work with Seeds of Caring on the Hunger Heroes initiative.
Hunger Heroes is coming to the Glendale Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library on Wednesday, November 4, from 1 PM to 2 PM. It's a service project run in partnership with Seeds of Caring, and it's part of the Homeschool at the Library program, a strand of programming at the library that combines learning with hands-on activity. The whole thing is made possible through gifts to The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation.
If you're homeschooling, this is one of those sessions that lets you check two boxes at once: a learning activity and a way to get the kids involved in something that helps other people. The project is called Hunger Heroes, and the partnership with Seeds of Caring puts the focus on service and community. It's an hour-long session, so it fits right into a weekday morning or early afternoon without taking over the whole day.
The Glendale Branch itself has a bit of a story. It was the first full-service library in the country to be located in a major shopping mall, opening in 2000 in Glendale Mall. In 2024, it moved to a new 24,800-square-foot space at the site of the former John Strange Elementary School, where it continues to serve the Glendale and Broad Ripple communities. The branch has been around in some form since 1930, with a stand-alone library opening in 1949 and a larger branch in Broad Ripple Park in 1986.
