Grateful Shred, the Los Angeles Grateful Dead cover band, plays Turntable in Indianapolis as an 18+ show.
Grateful Shred play Turntable on Monday, November 2, their first Indianapolis stop in a while. They're a Los Angeles-based Grateful Dead cover band that got their start playing the Shakedown Street vendor area before Dead and Company shows, and they've since grown into a national touring act. Their name became a thing after the Busted at the Bowl video, which caught them starting an impromptu set in the Hollywood Bowl parking lot before a 2017 Dead and Company show, playing right up until the police shut them down.
Bassist Dan Horne describes the project as a "take" rather than a tribute band. The goal is to channel the Dead's wide-open guitar tones, three-part vocal harmonies, and free-spirited vibe, with Americana, blues, folk, and jazz woven in. They're not just playing the hits; they're working with the same open-ended approach the Dead were known for. The band released its first full studio album, Might As Well, on its own Liberty Hair Farm Records label in June 2025, and they've put out a series of live releases called Dan's Dubs, which Horne mixes and masters himself.
On stage, the lineup is Austin McCutchen on vocals and guitar, Dan Horne on bass, pedal steel, and vocals, Mikaela Davis on vocals, Adam MacDougall on keys and vocals, John Lee Shannon on guitar, and Corey Rose on drums. With three people singing, those vocal harmonies Horne mentioned are a big part of the sound.
