English conversation class for adults and seniors at the Southport branch of the Indianapolis Public Library, led by TESOL-trained facilitators.
The English Conversation Circle meets at the Southport Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library on Monday, December 7, from 6 PM to 7 PM. It's one of several conversation classes the library runs across the city, and this one is aimed at adults and seniors. The sessions are led by TESOL-trained facilitators, so you're working with people who actually know how to teach English as a second language, not just native speakers chatting in a room.
The format is built around casual conversation, and that's where the real work happens. Rather than drilling from a textbook, the group talks through American culture, idioms, phrasal verbs, and some grammar as they come up. It's the kind of thing that's hard to pick up from a bookβthe way people actually talk in the city, the phrases that don't always translate literally, and the cultural shorthand that makes a conversation feel natural. If you've been studying English but still feel a bit stiff when you actually start talking, this is exactly the kind of space to shake that off.
The Southport Branch itself has a bit of a story. It started back in 1967 as a small storefront in the Madison Square Shopping Center. In 1974, a new 15,700-square-foot library opened at 2630 East Stop 11 Road, and it was built in part with more than $5,000 raised by Perry Township residents who wanted extra books for the collection. The English Conversation Circle is made possible by The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation.
