Free basic computer classes in Spanish for seniors and adults, covering an introduction to computers, the internet, email and Microsoft Office and Google Docs.
Fort Ben Branch is hosting Clases Básicas de Computación on Saturday, November 7, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM. It's a basic computer class taught in Spanish, and as the name suggests, it's aimed at seniors and adults who want to get more comfortable with their devices and the software they need to get things done.
The session is taught by Michael and Suzanne Burley, and it covers the fundamentals from the ground up. You'll start with an introduction to computers and how to navigate the internet, then move on to setting up an email account. From there, it gets into the basics of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as Google Docs—the kind of tools that come up in almost every job or errand these days. If you've been avoiding your computer because it feels like a foreign language, this is a good place to start.
The class is held at the Fort Ben Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library, at 9330 East 56th Street. It's a 22,000-square-foot branch in a high-traffic area with good public transport access, and it doubles as a neighborhood hub with community meeting spaces and study rooms. The building runs on a rooftop solar photovoltaic system that provides 80% of its electricity, and the land was part of a redevelopment plan after it passed from the U.S. military to the City of Indianapolis in the 1990s. It's also the first library in Indiana to become a Certified Autism Center™.
