Chair-based yoga session with Lisa Daugherty that combines breathing techniques and gentle movements to improve focus, posture, flexibility and relaxation.
Lisa Daugherty leads a chair yoga and mindfulness session at the Michigan Road Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library on Wednesday, November 4, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. It's a chair-based class, so you'll be doing the whole thing seated rather than on a mat, which makes it accessible for seniors and adults who might find getting up and down from the floor a bit much.
The session combines breathing techniques with gentle stretches and movements. The goal is to work on a few things at once: heart rate, mental focus, posture, flexibility, balance, and strength. Daugherty describes the practice as a form of relaxation that energizes both body and mind by connecting breath to movement, which she says promotes steadiness, confidence, and a sense of well-being. Intermittent meditative music carries the class, and it closes with a brief meditation.
If you want to keep going after the session, the library has two book lists—Every Body Yoga and Fit Lit: Every Body Yoga—that can point you toward more reading on the subject. The program is made possible by The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation with support from Honda. The Michigan Road Branch itself is a 20,000-square-foot library that opened in December 2018, located at 6201 North Michigan Road in Indianapolis.
