Broadway in Indianapolis: The Sound of Music

Broadway in Indianapolis brings The Sound of Music to Clowes Memorial Hall from January 12 to 17, 2027. It's a Rodgers and Hammerstein classic—music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse—suggested by The Trapp Family Singers and based on the memoirs of Maria Augusta Trapp. The stage version follows a spirited postulant sent to serve as governess to the seven children of an imperious captain, and the score carries songs like "Do-Re-Mi," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," and "Edelweiss." The 1965 Oscar-winning film remains one of the most successful movie musicals of all time.

This production is directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien, known for Hairspray, and is part of a critically acclaimed North American tour. It's one of the shows in Broadway in Indianapolis's 2026-2027 season, which executive director Leslie Broecker built around four Indianapolis premieres alongside returning fan favorites. The cast features Kevin Earley as Captain Georg von Trapp, Cayleigh Capaldi as Maria Rainer, and Christiane Noll as the Mother Abbess. The von Trapp children are played by Ariana Ferch as Liesl, Eli Vander Griend as Friedrich, Ava Davis as Louisa, Benjamin Stasiek as Kurt, Haddie Mac as Brigitta, Ruby Caramore as Marta, and Luciana VanDette as Gretl.

There are evening performances at 7 PM from January 12 to 15, with a double bill on Saturday, January 16, at 2 PM and 7:30 PM, and a final pair on Sunday, January 17, at 1 PM and 6:30 PM. The show runs 2 hours and 40 minutes with one intermission. It's recommended for ages 7 and up, with an audience advisory for Nazi iconography and flashing lights. Clowes Memorial Hall is at 4602 Sunset Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46208.
