American Piano Awards finalist Connor Rohrer plays two sets with Kenny Phelps on drums and Jeremy Allen on bass at The Jazz Kitchen.
Connor Rohrer plays The Jazz Kitchen on Saturday, November 14, as part of the American Piano Awards Premiere Series. He's a pianist, arranger and composer based in Miami, and for this show he's bringing in Kenny Phelps on drums and Jeremy Allen on bass. It's not just a one-off gig, either: the Premiere Series is where the competition's first adjudicated performances happen. Each of the five finalists plays two sets before an international jury, and the results feed into the American Piano Awards Finals.
Rohrer has a resume that puts him well beyond the usual competition circuit. He's played the Newport Jazz Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival and the BBC Proms, and has stood on the stages of Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. He's recorded with Ron Carter and Dayna Stephens, and he tours with vocalist Samara Joy. On the awards front, he was a second-place finalist in the 2023 Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz International Piano Competition and took home the 2022 Downbeat Student Jazz award for Graduate Outstanding Original Composition.
Because this is part of the Premiere Series, you're catching him in a specific moment of the competition. He'll be playing two sets, and the jury's take on them will count toward the final standings. It's a bit different from a standard club date—you're watching a finalist work through the first judged round of the American Piano Awards in real time.
