A spoken word and poetry slam open mic night hosted by Write About Now, featuring poet T'Aura and hosted by Xach Blunt.
Write About Now brings another poetry open mic to AvantGarden on Wednesday, October 28, from 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM. The night is built around the open mic, but it's anchored by a featured poet: T'Aura, coming in from Chicago. Xach Blunt hosts, and DJ Bloom is on the 1s and 2s, so there's a beat running through the evening rather than just a quiet room. The whole thing runs about three hours, and the open mic slots are filled first-come, first-served, with the sign-up lists going up at 7:30 PM. If you're planning to perform, you'll want to be there when the list opens.
For those who haven't crossed paths with them, Write About Now is a Houston spoken word staple that's grown into something bigger than a local night. They've been called the country's best open mic, a title voted by the national spoken word awards, and they draw poets and audiences from across the country every week. That national reach shows up in the lineup, tooโbringing in a featured poet from Chicago like T'Aura is part of how they keep the room moving beyond just the local scene. Over the years, they've picked up coverage in Vibe Magazine, the Houston Chronicle, and Texas Monthly, and they've built a following of more than 2 million across their social channels.
