Neo psychedelic pop rock band Tripping Daisy live in concert with special guests The Deathray Davies and Jumprope.
Tripping Daisy play The Heights Theater on Wednesday, October 7, with The Deathray Davies and Jumprope opening. It's a Houston show for a band that started in Dallas back in 1990, built around frontman Tim DeLaughter. They grew into a real presence in the alternative and psychedelic rock scenes, and people often described their sound as 'Beatlesque grunge.'
Their debut album, Bill, came out in 1992 on Dragon Street Records and sold over 20,000 copies locally. The breakthrough was I Am an Elastic Firecracker in 1995, which gave them the hit 'I Got a Girl'—certified Gold in the U.S. and Platinum in Canada. That was followed by Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb in 1998 and the self-titled Tripping Daisy in 2000, which capped off their original run. Their music landed in movies like The Craft, Basquiat, and Saturday Morning Cartoons, and on TV via Beavis and Butt-Head and Late Night with Conan O'Brien.
The band split on December 14, 1999, after guitarist Wes Berggren died of an overdose. His father, Don, played Fender Rhodes on the posthumous final album. DeLaughter later formed The Polyphonic Spree, a 24-piece symphonic rock band, with former bandmates Mark Pirro and Bryan Wakeland.
