Axiom Quartet presents Eternally Modern with works by Gesualdo, Haydn and Beethoven, exploring how music remains modern long after its own time.
Axiom Quartet opens their new season at Musik Halle on Thursday, October 15, with a program called The Old Made New. The evening brings together works by Gesualdo, Haydn, and Beethoven, and it's the first of six concerts in their Eternally Modern season—a series built around the idea of how music stays modern long after its own time.
That season-long theme is the through-line for everything they're doing this year. The quartet is pairing Beethoven's final string quartets and the Grosse Fuge with music from composers who dared to imagine the future: Gesualdo, Haydn, Debussy, Ives, Amy Beth Kirsten, Joan Tower, Richard Lavenda, and George Rochberg. It's a wide span of eras and styles, and The Old Made New is the starting point.
They describe the whole season as being framed around renewal, built on the idea that the artists who continue to move us across centuries are the ones who keep growing, questioning, and reinventing themselves. That's the lens they're bringing to the program—looking at these older works not as museum pieces, but as things that still have something to say.
