A juried healing arts exhibition exploring fatherhood as a public health approach to healthier living, featuring local visual stories and lived experiences.
The Health Museum is currently showing The Fatherhood Effect, a healing arts exhibition that opened to the public on Saturday, August 15, 2026, and runs through February 21, 2027. It's the latest installment of the museum's Healing Arts Program, which launched in 2024 with Healing Hands: A Collection of Caregiver Expressions on Mental Wellness.
The show grew out of an open call for art that positioned fatherhood as a public health approach to healthier living. It pulls together local stories and lived experiences to ask how fatherhood has evolved over the last three decades, and how engaged fatherhood contributes to healthier children, stronger families, and more connected communities. It's a juried community show, so the work comes from people in the city rather than a single artist, and the jury was made up of fathers and community leaders from across Houston.
One of the more direct things the exhibition does is challenge the old stereotypes that define fathers solely as providers. Instead, it puts the focus on care, emotional connection, and shared responsibility. The visual stories on display treat fatherhood as a pathway to individual and community well-being, and because it's a community show, those stories come from the people who've lived them.
