Exhibition exploring the history and future visions for the Harris County Domed Stadium (Astrodome) in Downtown Houston.
Architecture Center Houston opens Big Dome, Bigger Dreams: Visions for Harris County Domed Stadium on Thursday, October 22, and it runs through January 22, 2027. The opening event is that first Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the center's gallery on Commerce Street.
The exhibition is about the Harris County Domed Stadium, though almost everyone here knows it as the Astrodome. It opened in 1964 as the world's first fully enclosed, air-conditioned sports stadium—a big deal in a city known for punishing heat. At the height of the Space Age, it was called the 'Eighth Wonder of the World,' and it earned that reputation through a few firsts: a revolutionary roof, an animated scoreboard, and the indoor grass that eventually became AstroTurf. Those innovations helped redefine architecture, engineering, and entertainment all at once.
Over the decades, the Dome became more than just a building. Mickey Mantle played under its roof, Billie Jean King made history there, and thousands of people sought refuge inside after Hurricane Katrina. It's a Texas Historical Landmark now, but at 60 years old, it stands silent with no clear path forward. Big Dome, Bigger Dreams looks back at past reuse proposals and asks visitors to weigh its ambition, innovation, and cultural moments against whatever should come next.
