Kishi Bashi performs on his Sonderlust 10th Anniversary Tour, with special guest Geographer.
Kishi Bashi plays The Heights Theater on Sunday, October 18, as part of his Sonderlust 10th Anniversary Tour, with Geographer opening. Kishi Bashi is the stage name of Kaoru Ishibashi, an Emmy-nominated singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He's a Berklee-trained violinist known for high-energy live shows and a loop-based violin style that lets him build full arrangements on the fly. Over the years, he's worked with major symphonies like the National Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Philharmonic, the Seattle Symphony, and the Oregon Symphony, blending classical and pop influences. He's also toured internationally with Regina Spektor and of Montreal.
This tour centers on Sonderlust, his second album, which came out in 2016. It was a shift for him: he moved away from the ornate violin loops of his earlier work toward vintage synths, warmer textures, and a more vulnerable sound. The album's title comes from 'sonder'βthe realization that every stranger you pass is the center of their own complicated, beautiful universe. That idea still sits at the heart of the record.
To mark the anniversary, Joyful Noise Recordings has released a 10th-anniversary edition of Sonderlust that adds two previously unreleased B-sides, demos of all ten album tracks, and a reimagined cover by artist Ssin Kim. It's a good look at the songs in their rawest form, and the tour brings that material back to the stage.
