Deer Tick performs live at The Heights Theater with special guest Presley Haile.
Deer Tick play The Heights Theater on Saturday, October 17, with Texas Americana artist Presley Haile opening. It's their ninth studio album, Coin-O-Matic, that's bringing them through, and it's a record that looks back toward the band's home state of Rhode Island. The songs draw on the hidden histories there, where working-class family dramas ran into the mafia underworld.
Coin-O-Matic follows Emotional Contracts, which Uncut named one of the best albums of 2023. It's also the band's first self-produced record in more than two decades, cut at their own home studio. They brought in guest musicians for the sessions, including Los Lobos' Steve Berlin on baritone sax and former member Rob Crowell on organ.
The core lineup — singer/guitarist John McCauley, guitarist/singer Ian O'Neil, drummer/singer Dennis Ryan, and bassist Christopher Ryan — pulled from their Irish-Catholic upbringing and personal memories to write about desperation, grief, redemption, and resilience. One track, "Dog Years," was inspired by an assisted-living facility near McCauley's childhood home. Opening the night is Presley Haile, a Texas Americana artist from Hamilton.
