Indigenous art intervention by Tribal Fusion Art on view inside the Canadian Immigration Story exhibition at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.
Welcome to Turtle Island is an Indigenous art intervention on view at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in Halifax, and it's one of those things that stays put for a while rather than flashing by in a weekend. It opened on December 31, 2025, and runs through to December 31, 2027, so you've got plenty of time to fit it in.
The work is by Tribal Fusion Art, a collaboration of fused-glass artists. Two of the names behind it are Melinda Robertson, Anishinaabe of Lake Manitoba First Nation, and Shannon Monk, Anisininew of St. Theresa Point First Nation, Mi'kmaq of Lennox Island First Nation, and Celtic from Nova Scotia. The medium is fused glass, and the title, Welcome to Turtle Island, refers to the Indigenous name for North America.
What makes this an intervention rather than just a standalone exhibit is where it sits. It's installed inside the museum's Canadian Immigration Story exhibition, right in the middle of the galleries that trace the history of people arriving in Canada. By placing it there, the work asks you to reconsider the story of movement, belonging, and relationship on this land long before the arrival of newcomers. It's a prompt to think about who was here first and how that shapes the way we talk about immigration and settlement today.
