Comedy show featuring stand-up and joke-filled debates hosted by Steve Patterson with Deborah Kimmett and Matt Wright.
The Debaters Live comes to the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium on Tuesday 15 December, part of a holiday tour marking 20 years of the show. It's the stage version of the long-running CBC Radio show and podcast, and the format stays the same: stand-up comedy and two joke-filled debates, played out in front of a live audience rather than recorded for broadcast. The tour is celebrating two decades of laughs and questionable facts, so this is one of the dates on the road.
Steve Patterson hosts, joined by his self-styled 'debating elves' Deborah Kimmett and Matt Wright. Patterson is an award-winning comedian with more than twenty years of international experience. Kimmett is an award-winning comic and author who's been a CBC performer for over 45 years, with three best-selling comedy albums and five books, including Windowshopping for God, which won the Silver Prize for Indie Book of 2025. Wright is a two-time JUNO-nominated stand-up, writer and actor who's opened for Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Gaffigan, John Mulaney and Theo Von.
Between the three of them, there's a lot of ground covered. The show follows the radio format, so you'll get the stand-up and the two debates that give the night its name. The debates are the core of it: two opposing sides arguing over a ridiculous premise, with the audience watching it all unfold in real time. It's a comedy show built on the back of a radio staple, and this tour is the way it's celebrating its 20th anniversary.
