The Embellishers offer live, on-the-spot embroidery experiences, transforming personal textiles into wearable artworks as part of the Nocturne Art at Night festival.
The Embellishers are taking over the Downtown Halifax Business Commission on Saturday, October 17, from 6:00 pm to midnight. The project is part of Nocturne Art at Night, the free festival that's been filling downtown Halifax with art after dark since the Nocturne Art at Night Society started it back in 2008.
What they do is pretty straightforward: they turn everyday clothing into custom works of art on the spot. They use flash-style embroidery and a needle-sharp twist of tattoo-parlour attitude to transform your own textiles into one-of-a-kind wearable artworks, and it happens through a playful, hands-on exchange and creative collaboration. The whole point is that you bring something in and leave with it changed.
This year's Nocturne theme is Embodied City, curated by Annalise Prodor, and a lot of the work asks visitors to move, sing, sew or talk to a stranger rather than just stand back and look. The Embellishers fit right into thatโit's about doing something with your hands and chatting with the people around you, not just watching from a distance. The project is run by Hannah Langille, Kel Parsons, Shannyn Reid, Summer Snow and Samantha Osmond.
