Guided tour of the Beaty Centre followed by a marine-themed pumpkin carving contest under its 18-metre Blue Whale skeleton.
The Beaty Centre for Marine Biodiversity is hosting a pumpkin carving contest on Thursday, October 29, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. It's a marine-themed night, so instead of the usual ghosts and ghouls, the goal is to carve something from the ocean into your pumpkin.
The evening starts with a guided tour of the Beaty Centre, giving you a look around the collections before you get to work. After the tour, everyone settles in to carve. The centre provides everything you need for the session: the pumpkin, the tools, and the skeleton. That last one is the real draw of the night—the carving takes place right under the centre's 18-metre blue whale skeleton, which they've nicknamed 'Spooky Scary Skeleton'. It's a massive piece of anatomy to have hanging over your shoulder while you're working on your pumpkin, and it sets the whole mood for the evening.

Once the carving is done, there's judging to decide whose marine creation takes the prize. Between the tour, the carving, and the judging, it's a full two hours of activity. The Beaty Centre is at 6373 Edzell Castle Circle in Halifax, and the whole thing runs from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on the 29th.
