Family and interactive concert by Mi'kmaw fiddler and songwriter Morgan Toney, blending Cape Breton fiddling with Mi'kmaq songs.
Morgan Toney plays the Halifax Central Library on Saturday, October 24, at 3:00 PM. It's a family-friendly, interactive concert in the Paul O'Regan Hall, so it's the kind of afternoon you can bring the kids along to.
Toney is a Mi'kmaw songwriter and fiddler, and he describes his own style as 'Mi'kmaltic' — a blend of Cape Breton fiddling and Mi'kmaq songs. If you're familiar with the fiddle traditions of the East Coast, you'll recognise the Cape Breton side of that, but the Mi'kmaq songs bring something different to the mix. He'll be performing as both a fiddler and a singer, so you'll hear him on the instrument and on the mic.
The concert is part of a wider fall series called Fostering Indigenous-Jewish Dialogue in Mi'kma'ki: A Two-Eyed Seeing/Etuaptmumk Approach. It's organised by Dr Dorota Glowacka along with Dalhousie's Centre for Jewish Studies, MSVU's Two-Eyed Seeing Program, and other partners. The series brings together live performances and new works in Mi'kmaw and Yiddish musical traditions, so Toney's set sits within a larger project that looks at those two traditions side by side.
