Joce Reyome plays The Carleton on Sunday, September 28, as part of the Halifax Urban Folk Festival. It's one of the festival's many dates, which runs from September 27 to October 3 across the city, and this particular set falls under the Carleton Youth Songwriters' Showcase.
Reyome has built a following around a sound that blends classic blues with raw vocals and a throwback to the uninhibited origins of rock. They draw from Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin and Tracy Chapman — three voices that sit on the soulful, powerhouse end of the spectrum, and you can hear that lineage in the way they approach a song. It's a voice that doesn't hold back, and that raw edge is a good part of the appeal.
They've been playing more and more across Atlantic Canada, and the 2025 Solo/Duo Category win at the International Blues Challenge is a solid marker of where they're at. Since then, they've played the Confederation Centre of the Arts main stage, the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis, JUNOfest 2024 and the East Coast Music Awards. It's a fair bit of ground to cover in a short time, and this show is another stop on that run.
