Ria Mae is back in town on Thursday, October 1, playing The Carleton as part of the Halifax Urban Folk Festival. She'll be performing with The Halifax All Stars, and the night kicks off with a songwriters' circle featuring Chris Murphy, Billy Raffoul and Mallory Chipman.
If you've followed her, you know the sound: confessional lyrics and hooky songwriting. She's a platinum-selling pop artist from right here in Halifax, and her singles 'Bend', 'Ooh Love' and 'Clothes Off' have racked up over 90 million global streams. She's been nominated for a JUNO three times and took home SOCAN Songwriter of the Year at the NSMAs. The last couple of years have been a busy one for her: Two came out in 2025, and In the Stars followed in 2026, both produced by Classified. The two records mark a new collaborative phase for her, so this is a good chance to hear that material live.
Before she takes the stage, the evening opens with a songwriters' circle of the festival's headliners. Chris Murphy has spent more than 30 years in Sloan and has since formed the supergroups TUNS, Trans-Canada Highwaymen and Anyway Gang. Billy Raffoul put out two full-length albums in 2026, Billy Raffoul and When I Cross The River. And Mallory Chipman comes in from Edmonton — an award-winning musician, producer and scholar whose sound has been called 'the finest folk-rock currently being made'.

It's a long night of music, starting with the songwriters' circle and moving into Ria Mae's set. The show runs from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm at The Carleton, and tickets are C$72.50 plus HST.
