Halifax Fringe Festival

The Halifax Fringe Festival returns for its 36th year from September 3 to 13, 2026, running across multiple venues around the Halifax Regional Municipality. It's an eleven-day stretch of live, uncensored and uncurated performance art, with theatre and comedy making up the bulk of the programme.

If you're not familiar with how a Fringe works, the "uncurated" part is the point: there's no artistic director picking and choosing who gets a slot. Anyone can enter a show, which is why the line-up usually swings from the polished to the experimental in a single afternoon. The festival was established in 1990 and has run annually in Halifax for 29 years, operated as a non-profit by a volunteer board. It's a member of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals and Theatre Nova Scotia.

There are a few Fringe rules that keep the whole thing in check. Venues range from 30 to 180 seats, so you're never far from the performers. No show can be staged more than five times, and no show runs longer than 70 minutes, which makes it easy to string together a couple of different acts in one day without spending the whole night in a theatre. Tickets are capped at C$15, and 100% of the box office goes back to the artists.
