A public art-making workshop where participants create art while Champagne Weather performs live improvised music.
Champagne Weather bring their Portraits of Song workshop to Teichert Gallery on Saturday, October 3, starting at 2:00 PM. It's a public art-making session that's open to anyone, and the format is as straightforward as it sounds: the duo plays live, improvised music while you draw, paint, collage or write a poem. If you'd rather just sit and listen, that's fine too.
Champagne Weather is the name James Hill and Anne Janelle use when they play together. They're both Canadian Folk Music Award winners and JUNO nominees, and they each keep one foot in folk traditions and the other in improvised music. The sound they make bridges the two, and they describe it as evoking Philip Glass and Steve Reich even as it harks back to Appalachian fiddle and Maritime folksong. That's a fair amount of ground to cover in one room — the repetitive, shifting patterns of the minimalist composers sitting alongside the old-timey fiddle and the folk songs of the East Coast.
Because the music is improvised, it's not a set list you'll hear the same way twice. The two of them respond to each other in real time, and the music becomes the backdrop for whatever you're working on. Whether you're sketching, painting, collaging or writing, the point is to create something while they play. It's a workshop in the loosest sense of the word — there's no one telling you how to do it, and you don't need to be an artist to join in.
