Before You Settled

Gillian Lazanik is showing Before You Settled at Art 1274 Hollis Gallery, 1274 Hollis Street, from August 5 to September 1. It's a run that stretches nearly a full month, so there's plenty of time to swing by whenever you're downtown.

The work takes Nova Scotia's coast and countryside and strips them back to the wild, unclaimed state they were in before people arrived. It's the province as it existed before the roads, the fences and the rooftops—raw landscapes as they were before humans entered the picture. If you spend any time out on the coast or in the interior, you know exactly the kind of terrain she's talking about, and that's the version she's bringing inside.

Because the show runs for several weeks, you don't have to rush. You can catch it on a weekday lunch break or a weekend afternoon, and it's open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm throughout. The gallery is right on Hollis Street, so it's an easy stop if you're already in the downtown core. Before You Settled stays on the walls until September 1, with the gallery open 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
