The Atlantic International Film Festival returns to Cineplex Cinemas Park Lane from Wednesday 16 to Wednesday 23 September, eight days of cinema in the heart of Halifax. This is the 46th edition of the festival, and it's a big one: 113 feature and short films. It kicks off on opening night, 16 September, with the world premiere of 111 ECHOES FROM HALIFAX. A few days later, on 19 September, the Atlantic Gala brings the Canadian premiere of THE SNAKE, the debut feature from P.E.I. director Jenna MacMillan.
AIFF has been a fixture here for a long time. It started as a grassroots thing in St. John's, Newfoundland, back in 1981, moved to Halifax the following year, and has grown over four decades into one of Canada's premier film festivals and a registered charity. Its mission is to champion emerging and established filmmaking voices from Atlantic Canada and beyond. That work doesn't stop when the festival ends, either: there's year-round programming, including AIFF Kids and the AIFF Filmmaker Lab mentorship program. The festival also presents the AIFF and Linda Joy Awards, which this year added a new award commemorating the life and work of filmmaker James MacSwain. And if you're not in the city, AIFF Online carries features and shorts from the region, though it's only available within the Atlantic provinces.
