Art exhibition and book signing by acclaimed Mi'kmaq artist Alan Syliboy at The Prow Gallery, featuring new and older work.
Alan Syliboy opens a new exhibition at The Prow Gallery on August 6, and it runs through August 28. It's a mix of new and older work, so you'll see where he's been as much as where he's at now. The show also includes a signing of his book, Alan Syliboy: The Journey So Far, published by Nimbus Publishing.
Syliboy is a Mi'kmaq artist whose work comes from the indigenous petroglyph tradition—a vocabulary of symbolic icons he's made his own, and whose popularisation has helped restore community pride in Mi'kmaq heritage. It wasn't always easy going, though. He grew up believing native art was generic and found painting difficult and painful as a youth, unsure of his identity. His confidence grew in 1972 when he studied privately with Shirley Bear, and he later attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, where twenty-five years on he was invited to sit on the Board of Governors.

The Prow Gallery is owned by Cheryl Bell and is the sister gallery of 14 Bells Fine Art Gallery in the historic Hydrostone Market; its mandate is to support working Canadian artists. You'll find it at 1479 Lower Water Street in Halifax. The exhibition runs from August 6 to August 28, with the book signing as part of the show.
