The Whistlebinkies celebrate 50 years since their landmark album with a concert of traditional and original Scottish music.
The Whistlebinkies are playing the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Tuesday 26 January 2027, in the Strathclyde Suite. The night is called 50 Years On, and it marks half a century since the release of the landmark album that first put them on the map.
They're one of Scotland's most influential folk ensembles and pioneers of modern Scottish traditional music. The core of their sound is bellows-blown pipes, harp and fiddle, rounded out by flute, concertina and percussion. The set will run through strathspeys, reels and jigs, as well as airs and pipe marches, played with the energy, imagination and warmth that have defined the band for decades. Their repertoire moves between deep-rooted tradition and bold exploration, with original compositions and innovative arrangements.
They've worked with orchestras, choirs and acclaimed artists across the musical spectrum over the years. Flautist Eddie McGuire has written unique pieces for them, including 'The Fiddlers' Farewell', composed for the group's appearance with Yehudi Menuhin at the 1985 Edinburgh Festival, 'Riverside' with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in 1991, and 'Epopee Celtique' in 1997. The concert is a chance to hear that range in one go, from the traditional dance tunes to the more expansive, composed work.
