Glasgow folk 'n' roll band The Wakes announce an end of year hometown show at King Tut's, strictly 18+.
The Wakes are playing a hometown show at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut on Saturday 19 December, their end-of-year date in Glasgow. They're a Glasgow Irish folk'n'roll band who formed in late 2006 with an ambition to make music with a social conscience, and this is a proper Glasgow night for them.
Their sound puts traditional instrumentation alongside a contemporary edge, drawing as much on Guthrie, Springsteen and Dylan as on folk groups like The Dubliners and The Corries, with The Clash and The Pogues in the mix too. They write their own songs and play traditional ballads that cover local history and culture, so you'll hear their own material and traditional tunes in the same set. Over six years of touring Scotland, England and Ireland, they built a hardcore following in France and Germany, so they've spent plenty of time on the road outside the city.
The line-up runs to Paul on guitars and vocals, Chris on bass, flute and saxophone, Christopher James on harmonica and electric guitar, and Eamonn on drums and percussion, with session musicians filling out the keys and brass. It's a full band on stage, and the folk and rock sides of the sound both get their own space.
